Non-profit organization which provides legal assistance to persons with limited income and assets. Services in the following areas are provided free of charge to residents of Polk, Hardee and Highlands Counties. The Lakeland office handles cases in the following areas: Housing (eviction, water and electric shutoffs, harassments), Public Benefits (food stamps, Medicaid, Wages Program, overpayments), Social Security (overpayments, deductions, SSI and SSD), Employment (decided on an individual basis - wage discrepancies are referred to Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division), Unemployment Compensation, Consumer Affairs, Access to Health Care, Immigration (on a limited basis), Elder Law (for clients over 60 years of age).
Florida Rural Legal Services also administers the Pro Bono Program through the Volunteer Attorney Project. Applicants are screened to insure financial eligibility for free legal assistance and to determine whether the case is meritorious. Types of cases eligible for Pro Bono Program include: Divorce (physical abuse only), Custody (defense of custodial parent only), Adoptions (limited), Guardianship (limited basis),
Probate/Summary of Administration (cases handled on individual basis), Bankruptcy (only if foreclosure is involved), Foreclosure (mortgages), Real Property and Mobile Homes, Consumer, Contracts, Collections.
